A booklet is a court-specific reference for one filing, from first page to last.

The order of the papers

A typical writ petition index runs in this order. It is a template used in practice, not an official form.

What the Registry has asked for

  • Memo of parties with each party’s full particulars, including an email ID (Chapter III, Rule 1 of the Delhi High Court Rules).
  • A list of dates or a brief synopsis with the petition.
  • No corrections in the cause title, the index or the memo of parties; any other correction to be initialled.
  • The set prepared in the order of the index, with a soft copy where the notice then in force asked for one.

Writing the urgent application

  • Say what will happen, and on what date, if the matter is not heard early. A date is more persuasive than the word urgent.
  • Keep it to a page. The bench decides on listing in a few lines.
  • Make sure the urgency matches the interim prayer in the petition.

Check before you file

  • Cause title and memo of parties free of corrections
  • Email IDs of the parties included
  • Synopsis and list of dates placed as the current notice requires
  • Urgent application states a date, not just a feeling
  • Index followed exactly in the compiled set
